Plan the Room Before Choosing the Heater
A sauna heater should not be selected from floor dimensions alone. Ceiling height, glass, tile and other uninsulated surfaces can all increase the effective volume the heater must handle. Bench depth, seating height and available floor space also determine whether the room will be comfortable once the heater, door and ventilation are included.

How to Use Your Sauna Room Planning Estimate
The result is intended to help you establish a realistic starting point before selecting equipment or finalizing construction. It does not recommend a particular heater or confirm that a proposed installation meets every manufacturer requirement or local electrical code.
Start With the Finished Interior Dimensions
Enter the sauna’s finished internal length, width and height, not the dimensions measured before insulation, furring strips and interior paneling are installed.
Even a modest change in ceiling height can noticeably affect total room volume. It can also change the relationship between the upper bench and the hottest part of the room, which is why the calculator evaluates bench position as well as floor area.
For a sloped ceiling, use the highest point when comparing your room with the instructions supplied for the heater you are considering.
Account for Glass and Other Cold Surfaces
A basic length × width × height calculation describes the room’s physical volume, but it does not tell the whole heating story.
Glass doors, windows, stone, tile, brick and exposed concrete generally lose or absorb more heat than a properly insulated wood framed sauna wall. The tool converts the entered cold surface area into additional equivalent volume and adds it to the actual room volume.
The result is shown as Effective sizing volume. This is the figure you should compare with the official minimum and maximum room volume range published for a particular heater.

Treat Heater Size as a Range, Not a Single Universal Number
Two heaters with the same nominal power can have different approved room ranges, safety clearances, stone capacities, controller requirements and electrical specifications.
For that reason, the Verdict Lux estimate does not replace the specification table for the exact model. Once you have calculated the effective sizing volume:
- Find the heater’s official installation manual.
- Confirm that your effective volume falls within its stated room range.
- Check the minimum distances from walls, benches, guards and the ceiling.
- Confirm the required supply voltage, breaker, conductor size and controller.
- Have the final electrical design and connection completed by a qualified professional.

Use the Bench Plan as a Geometry Check
The Room Plan is designed to reveal basic layout conflicts before construction begins. It estimates the usable bench run, potential seating capacity and whether the selected lower bench can fit without creating an obvious conflict with the room arrangement.
Bench capacity is necessarily approximate. Real world seating depends on factors the tool cannot fully know, including:
- The exact heater footprint and safety guard
- Required clearances for the selected model
- Door swing and entry space
- Wall projections and trim
- Backrests and bench supports
- The amount of personal space expected per bather
The plan should therefore be treated as an early layout study rather than a construction drawing.
Pay Attention to Upper Bench Height
A deep bench is not automatically a comfortable bench. The distance between the upper bench and ceiling affects how bathers sit within the room’s heat zone, while excessive depth can reduce walking space or prevent a lower bench from fitting safely.

Plan Ventilation With the Complete System in Mind
The calculator displays a planning airflow target based on room volume, but airflow quantity alone does not determine whether a sauna will ventilate properly. Intake and exhaust locations depend on the heater, whether ventilation is natural or mechanical, and how the surrounding building’s ventilation system behaves.
The Room Plan illustrates a practical relationship between the heater and vents. It does not prescribe universal installation locations. Always follow the ventilation diagram supplied with the selected heater or sauna system.
Some specialized systems publish their own airflow requirements. For example, the Saunum Air installation manual specifies at least six air changes per hour for that system. That figure should not be applied blindly to every heater or ventilation design.
What This Tool Does Not Confirm
The estimate does not verify:
- Compliance with national or local building and electrical codes
- Compatibility with a particular heater or controller
- Manufacturer required safety clearances
- Conductor or breaker sizing
- Waterproofing, drainage or vapor barrier design
- Structural support for benches or equipment
- Suitability of materials for sauna temperatures
- The performance of the building’s ventilation system
