120V

A nominal electrical voltage commonly available from standard household circuits in North America. Some compact infrared and smaller plug-in saunas are designed for 120V power, but their circuit requirements can vary by model.

240V

A nominal electrical voltage commonly used in North American homes for higher-power equipment. Many traditional electric sauna heaters and some larger sauna systems operate on 240V and may require a dedicated circuit and permanent electrical connection.

A

Air Changes

The replacement of air inside a sauna with fresh air over a period of time. Air changes help remove stale air and support the movement of fresh air through the sauna, but the appropriate ventilation strategy depends on the sauna design, heater and ventilation method.

Air Intake

The opening or ventilation path through which fresh air enters the sauna. Intake location can affect how incoming air interacts with the heater, bathers and overall airflow pattern.

Alder

A wood species used for sauna benches, wall cladding and other interior components. Alder generally has a warmer and darker appearance than woods such as aspen and is commonly found in European sauna products.

Amperage

The amount of electrical current flowing through a circuit, measured in amperes or amps (A). Sauna electrical specifications may list amperage to help determine circuit, breaker and wiring requirements.

Aspen

A light-colored hardwood commonly used for sauna benches, wall cladding and interior components, particularly in European sauna construction. Its relatively understated grain and light appearance make it suitable for contemporary sauna interiors.

Assembly Clearance

Additional space needed around a sauna cabin or its components during assembly. This space may be greater than the clearance required after installation and can affect whether a prefab sauna can be assembled in the intended location.

B

Bather Capacity

The number of people a sauna is designed to accommodate at one time. Manufacturer capacity ratings are useful for comparison, but actual comfort also depends on bench length, interior dimensions and how much personal space each user prefers.

C

CARB Compliance

A term indicating that a product or composite wood material is represented as meeting applicable formaldehyde emission requirements established by the California Air Resources Board. For sauna buyers, the term may appear in specifications for plywood, fiberboard or other engineered wood components.

CARB compliance should not be interpreted as a general certification of the entire sauna's safety, construction quality or indoor air quality.

Carbon Heater

An infrared heating element that typically uses a relatively large flat surface to emit infrared energy into the sauna. Carbon heaters are common in residential infrared saunas and are often positioned across walls, behind benches or around the cabin to distribute heat across a wider area.

CE Marking

A conformity marking required for certain products covered by European Union product rules. By affixing the CE marking, the manufacturer declares that the product meets the applicable EU requirements for placing it on the relevant market. CE marking should not automatically be interpreted as the same type of independent third-party product certification represented by a North American NRTL listing.

CE marking is not the same type of third-party product safety listing commonly associated with organizations such as UL or certification marks provided through recognized testing laboratories.

Cedar

A general name used for several wood species commonly found in sauna construction. Cedar is valued for its appearance, relatively low heat conductivity and resistance to moisture and decay, but the exact properties depend on the species and grade being used.

Ceiling Height

The vertical distance from the sauna floor to the ceiling. Ceiling height affects interior volume, bench positioning and heat distribution and can influence the heater capacity required for the room.

Ceramic Heater

An infrared heating element that uses ceramic material to produce and emit heat. Ceramic emitters can operate with a relatively concentrated heat output compared with larger carbon panels, although performance depends on the specific heater design and placement.

CFM

Cubic feet per minute. A unit used to describe the volume of air moved by a ventilation system each minute. CFM is particularly relevant when evaluating fans and mechanically ventilated sauna installations.

Clear Cedar

Cedar lumber selected for having few or no visible knots on its finished surfaces. Clear grades are often used in premium sauna interiors where a cleaner and more uniform appearance is preferred, although grading terminology can vary between suppliers.

Convection

The movement of heat through a fluid such as air. In a traditional sauna, air heated around the sauna heater rises while cooler air moves through the room, contributing to temperature distribution and circulation.

D

Dedicated Circuit

An electrical circuit intended to supply a specific appliance or piece of equipment rather than serving multiple unrelated loads. Many sauna heaters and some complete sauna systems require a dedicated circuit according to their installation specifications.

E

Electric Sauna Heater

An electric sauna heater powered by electricity that heats the sauna room and, in most traditional designs, a load of sauna stones. Electric heaters are available in different power outputs and installation styles, including wall-mounted and floor-standing models.

Electrical Load

The amount of electrical power or current required by connected equipment. For a sauna installation, the electrical load can include the heater and, depending on the system, controls, lighting and other electrical components.

EMF

Electromagnetic field. Electric fields are associated with voltage, while magnetic fields are produced when electric current flows. Electrical wiring and components in an infrared sauna can therefore produce electromagnetic fields. Reported EMF measurements can vary with frequency, measurement location, distance from the source and operating conditions.

ETL Listed

A certification mark indicating that a product has been independently tested and certified by Intertek to applicable product safety standards. Intertek is an OSHA-recognized Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) in the United States. For sauna buyers, the listing should be verified for the specific sauna, heater, controller or component rather than assumed to cover every product sold by a brand.

For sauna buyers, an ETL mark may appear on complete sauna systems, heaters, controls or other electrical equipment. The listing should be checked for the specific product rather than assumed to apply to every component sold by a brand.

Exhaust Vent

An opening through which air leaves the sauna. Its location and operation depend on the ventilation strategy and sauna design. In mechanically ventilated systems, an exhaust fan may actively remove air from the room.

F

Far Infrared (FIR)

The longer-wavelength portion of infrared radiation. Far infrared is widely used in infrared saunas, where emitters transfer radiant energy toward the occupants and surrounding surfaces without requiring the room air to reach the temperatures typical of a traditional sauna.

Floor Drain

A drain installed at or near floor level to allow water to leave the space. Whether a sauna requires a floor drain depends on the sauna design, installation environment, intended use and applicable construction requirements.

FSC Certification

Certification within the Forest Stewardship Council system for responsibly managed forests and the traceability of forest-based materials through the supply chain. For finished sauna products, an FSC claim may depend on chain-of-custody requirements that track eligible material through processing, manufacturing and distribution. FSC certification concerns forest sourcing and supply-chain practices, not electrical or sauna product safety.

For sauna products, FSC claims may relate to particular wood materials or products. FSC certification primarily concerns forestry and supply-chain practices and should not be interpreted as an electrical or sauna safety certification.

Full-Spectrum Infrared

A term commonly used for infrared sauna systems designed to provide more than one infrared wavelength range, typically combining near, mid and far infrared. The exact wavelength output and emitter configuration vary between manufacturers, so “full spectrum” should not be assumed to describe identical technology across different saunas.

G

GFCI

Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter. A protective device designed to interrupt electrical power when it detects certain differences between the current flowing out and returning through a circuit. Whether and where GFCI protection is required for a sauna installation depends on the equipment, installation instructions and applicable electrical code.

Gravity Ventilation

A ventilation approach that relies primarily on natural differences in air temperature and pressure rather than an exhaust fan to move air through the sauna. Vent placement is an important part of establishing the intended airflow pattern.

H

Hardwired

Connected permanently to an electrical circuit rather than powered through a standard plug and receptacle. Many traditional electric sauna heaters are hardwired as part of their installation.

Heat-Up Time

The amount of time required for a sauna to reach the intended bathing temperature from its starting temperature. Heat-up time varies with heater output, sauna size, insulation, construction, glazing, ambient conditions and other installation factors.

Heater Capacity

The heating capability required for a particular sauna room, commonly expressed in kilowatts for electric sauna heaters. Appropriate capacity depends primarily on room volume, while glass, masonry and other poorly insulated surfaces can increase the effective heating requirement.

Heater Clearance

The minimum distance required between a sauna heater and nearby walls, benches, guards or other surfaces. Required clearances are specific to the heater and installation, so the manufacturer's instructions should determine the final layout.

Heater Guard

A protective barrier installed around or near a sauna heater to reduce the likelihood of accidental contact while maintaining the clearances required for safe heater operation. Guard design and positioning must remain compatible with the heater manufacturer's installation requirements.

Heater Output

The rated heating power of a sauna heater. For electric sauna heaters, output is commonly expressed in kilowatts (kW) and is one of the main specifications used when matching a heater to sauna room size.

Hemlock

A softwood commonly used for sauna walls, benches and prefabricated cabins. Hemlock typically has a relatively uniform appearance and is often chosen when a lighter, less visually pronounced wood surface is desired.

Hot Room

The heated interior space of a traditional sauna where the benches and sauna heater are located. The hot room is designed to retain heat while allowing appropriate ventilation and air circulation.

I

Indoor Sauna

A sauna installed inside a home, wellness room, bathroom, basement or other enclosed building space. Indoor installations require planning for available space, electrical service, ventilation, flooring and surrounding materials.

Infrared Emitter

The component in an infrared sauna that produces infrared radiation. Emitters may use carbon, ceramic or other technologies and can be positioned in different areas of the cabin to direct radiant energy toward the user.

Infrared Sauna

A sauna that uses infrared emitters to transfer radiant energy toward the occupants and interior surfaces rather than relying primarily on heating the room air to the higher temperatures associated with traditional sauna bathing.

Infrared Spectrum

The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond visible red light. Infrared radiation covers a broad range of wavelengths commonly divided into near, mid and far infrared bands. Infrared sauna manufacturers may use one or several of these ranges depending on the system.

Installation Footprint

The total physical space that a sauna installation occupies or requires. It may include more than the sauna cabin's published exterior dimensions when additional clearance, ventilation space, electrical access or service access is necessary.

Insulation

Material installed within the walls and ceiling to reduce unwanted heat transfer. In a traditional sauna, appropriate insulation helps the room retain heat and can affect heating performance, energy use and heater sizing.

Intake Vent

A vent specifically intended to introduce fresh air into the sauna. Its correct position can vary depending on heater type and whether the sauna uses natural or mechanical ventilation.

IP Rating

Ingress Protection rating, commonly associated with the IEC 60529 IP Code. It classifies the degree of protection provided by an electrical enclosure against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid objects and water. An IP designation uses the letters IP followed by characteristic digits or, in some cases, an X where a characteristic is not specified. The required degree of protection depends on the equipment and installation environment.

An IP rating consists of the letters IP followed by classification digits, such as IPX4 or IP44. The required rating depends on the equipment and installation environment.

K

Kilowatt (kW)

A unit of power equal to 1,000 watts. Electric sauna heater output is commonly specified in kilowatts, such as 6 kW, 8 kW or 9 kW. A higher kW rating does not automatically mean a better heater; the heater must be appropriately matched to the sauna room.

L

Low EMF

A marketing and product specification term used by some infrared sauna manufacturers to describe designs intended to produce lower electromagnetic field measurements in particular locations or under specified test conditions. Because there is no single universal consumer definition of “low EMF,” comparisons should consider the actual measurements, testing method and measurement distance rather than the label alone.

Low-VOC

A term used to describe a material or product formulated to emit relatively low levels of volatile organic compounds compared with conventional alternatives. Because definitions and testing criteria can vary, a “low-VOC” claim is more useful when accompanied by a recognized standard, certification or specific emissions information.

Löyly

A Finnish sauna term commonly used for the steam and sensation created when water is poured onto heated sauna stones. Löyly temporarily increases humidity and changes how the heat feels without necessarily producing a large change in room temperature.

M

Mechanical Ventilation

A ventilation system that uses a fan or another powered component to move air into or out of the sauna. Mechanical ventilation allows airflow to be actively controlled rather than relying entirely on natural air movement.

Mid Infrared (MIR)

The middle portion of the infrared spectrum between near and far infrared. Some full-spectrum infrared sauna systems are marketed as providing mid infrared alongside near and far infrared wavelengths.

N

Natural Ventilation

Ventilation that relies on natural air movement rather than powered fans. Temperature and pressure differences help move air between intake and exhaust openings when the sauna and vent layout are designed for this approach.

Near Infrared (NIR)

The infrared wavelength range closest to visible light. Some infrared sauna systems incorporate near-infrared emitters, either independently or as part of a full-spectrum configuration.

Non-Insulated Surface

An interior sauna surface that does not retain heat in the same way as an insulated wood wall, such as substantial areas of glass, masonry, stone or similar materials. These surfaces can increase the effective heating requirement considered when sizing a traditional sauna heater.

NRTL

Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. In the United States, an NRTL is a private-sector organization recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as meeting the requirements to test and certify products within its recognized scope using applicable product safety standards. Each NRTL uses its own certification mark, so the relevant product, standard and certification scope matter more than simply comparing the names of testing organizations.

This distinction is useful because buyers sometimes treat UL and ETL as if one simply means “certified” and the other does not. The actual certification context and applicable standard matter more than that simplification.

O

Outdoor Sauna

A sauna designed or installed outside the main building, such as in a backyard, garden or separate wellness structure. Outdoor saunas require additional consideration for weather exposure, foundation or site preparation, utilities and climate.

Over-Temperature Protection

A safety function intended to respond when equipment reaches a temperature outside its intended operating conditions. Depending on the sauna system, protection may involve a temperature limiter, sensor, control system or other protective component.

The exact operation depends on the equipment design.

P

Passive Ventilation

A general term for ventilation that does not rely on powered fans to produce the primary airflow. In sauna discussions, it may overlap with terms such as natural or gravity ventilation, although terminology can vary between manufacturers and installation guides.

Prefab Sauna

A prefabricated sauna supplied as a manufactured kit or cabin with major components prepared before delivery. Depending on the model, assembly may still require electrical work, site preparation, ventilation planning or professional installation.

R

Room Volume

The amount of three-dimensional space inside a sauna room, typically calculated from its interior length, width and height. Room volume is a primary factor when determining an appropriate heater output, although glass, masonry and other poorly insulated surfaces may also affect heater sizing.

S

Safety Certification

A general term for third-party evaluation or certification showing that a product has been assessed against specified safety requirements or standards.

The term alone does not identify which standard was used, which organization performed the evaluation or which parts of a sauna system are covered. Buyers should therefore look for the specific certification mark and product listing.

Safety Clearance

The minimum separation required between equipment and nearby surfaces, materials or other objects for safe installation and operation. Sauna heater clearances can vary substantially by model and must follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Sauna Bench

A seating or reclining surface inside the sauna, typically made from wood suitable for high-temperature environments. Bench height, depth and layout affect usable capacity and the level of heat experienced by the bather.

Sauna Cabin

A self-contained sauna enclosure that contains the heated bathing space. The term is commonly used for both traditional and infrared sauna units and may refer to prefab, modular or purpose-built designs.

Sauna Room

The enclosed space in which sauna bathing takes place. In a traditional sauna, room dimensions, insulation, ventilation, glazing and other construction details can influence heater sizing and heat distribution.

Sauna Stones

Heat-resistant stones placed in or around many traditional sauna heaters. They store and release heat and allow water to be applied to create löyly. Only stones suitable for sauna heater use should be used, following the heater manufacturer's instructions.

Sauna Stove

A general term for a heat source used in a traditional sauna. Depending on context, it may refer to a wood-burning sauna stove or another heater designed to heat the sauna room and sauna stones.

Service Clearance

Space maintained around equipment or a sauna installation so components can be inspected, accessed, maintained or replaced. Required service clearances vary by product and should be confirmed before the surrounding construction is finalized.

Single-Phase Power

An electrical power configuration commonly used in residential buildings. Sauna heaters may be manufactured for different electrical supplies, so voltage and phase requirements should be confirmed from the exact heater specifications before installation.

Spruce

A softwood traditionally used in many Nordic and European sauna interiors. Spruce can be used for wall and ceiling cladding and other sauna components, with appearance and knot content varying by species and grade.

Stone Capacity

The amount of sauna stones a heater is designed to hold. Stone capacity varies substantially between heater designs and can influence heat storage and the character of löyly. The heater should be loaded only with the type, quantity and arrangement of stones specified by its manufacturer.

T

Temperature Sensor

A component that measures temperature inside the sauna and provides information to the heater's control system. Its required position can be specific to the heater and controller, making manufacturer installation instructions important.

Thermal Cutoff

A safety device or function designed to interrupt or limit electrical operation when excessive temperature conditions are detected. Sauna heaters and related equipment may incorporate over-temperature protection as part of their safety system.

A thermal cutoff should not be treated as a substitute for correct heater installation, clearances or temperature sensor placement.

Thermally Modified Wood

Wood whose properties have been altered through controlled heat treatment rather than conventional surface treatment alone. Thermal modification can improve dimensional stability and reduce the wood's tendency to absorb moisture, although properties vary according to the species and modification process.

Thermostat

A control device used to regulate sauna temperature by responding to temperature measurements and controlling the heating system. Depending on the sauna, thermostat functions may be integrated into the heater, control panel or a separate control system.

Thermowood

A term often used for thermally modified wood, but ThermoWood® is specifically a registered trademark controlled by the International ThermoWood Association and may be used only within that system. Sauna buyers should therefore distinguish between generic thermally modified wood and products specifically identified as ThermoWood®.

Traditional Sauna

A sauna that primarily heats the room and its occupants using a high-temperature heater, typically with sauna stones, rather than infrared emitters directed toward the body. Water can usually be applied to heated stones to produce löyly.

U

UL Listed

A UL Solutions certification designation indicating that representative samples of a product were evaluated and found to meet applicable safety requirements for the product category. Certified products are also subject to ongoing follow-up requirements. A UL Listing should be verified for the specific sauna, heater, controller or component rather than generalized to every product from the manufacturer.

V

Vapor Barrier

A material or membrane used within a building assembly to limit the movement of water vapor through walls or ceilings. In purpose-built traditional sauna construction, vapor control is part of the overall wall and ceiling assembly and should be planned together with insulation and interior finishes.

Ventilation

The planned movement and exchange of air within a sauna. Effective sauna ventilation supplies fresh air, removes stale air and supports appropriate airflow through the heated space. The required vent locations and ventilation method depend on the sauna, heater and installation.

VOC

Volatile Organic Compound. A broad category of carbon-containing compounds that can evaporate into the air from materials such as coatings, adhesives, finishes and manufactured products. VOC emissions depend on the particular compound, material and conditions of use.

Voltage

The electrical potential difference in a circuit, measured in volts (V). Sauna equipment must be connected to the voltage specified by the manufacturer, such as 120V or 240V for many products sold in North America.

W

Wall Clearance

The required distance between sauna equipment, particularly a heater, and an adjacent wall or surface. The necessary clearance depends on the specific equipment, surrounding materials and manufacturer requirements.

Wattage

A measure of electrical power expressed in watts (W). Smaller electrical sauna components may be rated in watts, while the output of higher-power electric sauna heaters is more commonly expressed in kilowatts.

Wet Area

An area of a building designed or treated to accommodate regular exposure to water or moisture. A sauna itself is not automatically classified or constructed as a wet area in every jurisdiction, so applicable building requirements depend on the installation and local regulations.

Wood-Burning Sauna Stove

A sauna heater that burns wood rather than using electricity as its primary heat source. It heats the sauna room and a mass of sauna stones and requires appropriate chimney, combustion air, clearances and fire-safe installation.
